Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 ¾ cups all-purpose flour
  • ¾ cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 2 cups granulated sugar
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • ½ cup vegetable oil
  • 2 large eggs
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 1 cup hot water or coffee
  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • 8 oz dark chocolate, chopped
  • 1 tablespoon unsalted butter
  • Mini chocolate eggs for decoration

Instructions

  1. 1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C) and prepare a 9-inch round cake pan.
  2. 2. In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, cocoa, sugar, baking powder, baking soda, and salt. Add buttermilk, vegetable oil, eggs, and vanilla; mix until smooth. Gradually stir in hot water or coffee.
  3. 3. Pour batter into the prepared pan and bake for 30–35 minutes until a toothpick comes out clean. Allow cooling before transferring to a wire rack.
  4. 4. To make ganache, heat cream in a saucepan until simmering; pour over chopped chocolate and let sit for 2–3 minutes before stirring in butter until smooth.
  5. 5. Create the chocolate nest by melting dark chocolate and piping onto parchment paper in a circular shape; refrigerate until firm.
  6. 6. Assemble by pouring ganache over the cooled cake and placing the chocolate nest on top filled with mini eggs.
